Privacy Policy
Last Updated: April 29, 2026
This Privacy Policy is subject to change as REED develops. We will notify users of material changes through the app or via email. Your continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
COG Learning ("we," "us," or "our") developed REED, a reading companion app that helps caregivers read picture books with young children by providing questions to encourage conversation. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding your data.
1. Who Uses the App
REED is designed for use by adults (parents, caregivers, and educators) reading with young children. Adults create and manage accounts. Children participate in reading sessions under adult supervision but do not directly operate the App or create accounts.
2. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create a REED account, we may collect basic information such as a username, email address, and password. Passwords are stored in hashed form; we never store or have access to your plaintext password.
Child Profile Information
You may create child profiles within the App to personalize the reading experience. Profile information, such as the child's name, age, and reading preferences, is managed by you and may be stored on your device, on our servers, or both, depending on the App's features and your settings.
Reading Activity
The App may record reading session data, such as which books are read, session duration, and questions encountered. How and where this data is stored may vary as the App develops. We will update this policy with specifics as features are finalized.
De-Identified Usage Data
We may collect de-identified, aggregated usage data to help us understand how the App is used and to improve the reading experience. This may include information such as how often particular books are read, general time spent in reading sessions, and number of questions presented. This data is not linked to your identity or your child's identity and cannot be used to identify any individual user.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain the App and your account
- Deliver licensed publisher content needed to power the App's reading and question features
- Improve the quality and relevance of reading questions
- Understand general usage patterns (using de-identified data only)
- Communicate with you about your account or important updates to the App
4. Speech Recognition
The App may use speech recognition to support the reading experience. Depending on your device and platform, the App may use built-in speech recognition services provided by Apple or Google. These services are governed by Apple's Privacy Policy (https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/) and Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy), respectively. We do not store or transmit audio recordings from reading sessions to our own servers.
5. Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not collect audio recordings of reading sessions
- We do not use advertising trackers or ad networks
- We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties
- We do not collect location data
6. Third-Party Services
The App uses a limited number of third-party services to function, including:
- Apple App Store / Google Play Store for app distribution (standard store data per Apple's and Google's policies)
- Apple / Google Speech Services for on-device speech recognition (audio may be processed per platform provider's policies)
We do not integrate third-party advertising or ad tracking services. This list will be updated as the App develops and additional services are integrated.
7. Book Content
The App displays certain licensed publisher content, such as cover images and book metadata, to power its reading and question features. This content is used solely to operate the App and is not shared with third parties beyond what is necessary to deliver the App's functionality.
8. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including secure (HTTPS) communication with our servers, hashed password storage, and secure storage of authentication credentials. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children's Privacy
REED is operated by adults on behalf of children. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Child profile information is created and managed by the adult account holder.
If you believe that a child under 13 has provided personal information to us without appropriate parental consent, please contact us and we will take steps to remove that information.
10. Your Choices
- Account deletion: You may delete your account at any time through the App's settings or by contacting us. This will remove your account information from our servers.
- Profile data: You may edit or delete child profiles at any time within the App.
11. Data Retention
We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your account information from our servers within a reasonable timeframe. On-device data is retained until you delete it or uninstall the App.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the App following the posting of changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
